Neighborhood Watch in Communities – Sign & Sky 9

Fig 01- A sign of Neighborhood watch in a community.

I saw several signs of “neighborhood watch” in my community. Above sign was old one, need to be replaced.

As you might know that neighborhood watch is a program to bond among 3 parties:

- residents in certain area
- businesses
- policies

This program was initiated by The National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) in 1972, about 49 years ago.

The main purpose is to help residents and law enforcement at neighborhood level.

Now days, it is estimated more than 5,000 local agencies involve in the watch program.

How to involve in neighborhood watch program?

The programs of neighborhood watch are run by volunteer. The volunteers come from neighbors. Just register to be a volunteer.

Is the neighborhood watch program success to reduce crime?

Since the members are volunteers, the “measure” of success is relate to:

- improving relationship between residents and polices
- giving crucial tips to law enforcement to prevent a crime (robbery or burglary)
- preparing residents to handle disaster

Have your neighborhoods this kind of program?

  6. My (small) city has Public Security Police, Chamber Police, EMEL type police for parking lots. Lots of police to watch and control the city.
Isn't having civilian volunteers to control neighbors dangerous in a matter of hindering the freedom of human beings?

  11. My husband and I always comment that Islanders see everything. If we go to an area to look around, go for a walk or such, before long someone from the area is there to see what we are doing. Lol.

  17. Tanza, We do have a neighborhood watch program where we live and it's proven its worth. My wife spotted a potential porch package bandit casing out a neighbor's house the other day and upon seeing her, they sped off. We also have "COPS" Citizens on Patrol. The program uses old Sheriff Department vehicles with 2 volunteers in each car. They are radio equipped but don't have any arrest powers. They just call in a sheriff's deputy if they see something wrong. Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
