Even Pharaoh Died due to Virus - Science and Technology 4

Pharaoh, Ramses V (credit to Google)

We may know the deadly diseases called as smallpox. The diseases date back to thousand years ago.

Two viruses caused smallpox, they are:

- Variola major

- Variola minor

One of well known historical figures, ancient Egypt Pharaoh, Ramses V died due to smallpox.

He was the pharaoh of 19th dynasty, ruled Egypt in short time, from 1150 to 1145 BCE.

How we know the caused of Ramses V dead?

As reported by World Health Organization (WHO, May 1980) that after Ramses V mummy discovered in 1898, scientists have known the caused of pharaoh died.

The lesions on Ramses V face indicated acute illness due to smallpox at very young age.

In modern time or at least since 16th century, smallpox lead to million death per year. It was estimated about 500 millions dead in the 20th century only.

Smallpox dead toll was very very much higher compared to many wars included World War I and II combined.

Thank you to doctor Edward Jenner for his great work to find vaccine in England in 1796. Since then, infection rate and mortality rate decreased dramatically in many countries, especially in Europe and America.

WHO has started the program to vaccine world population since 1950. The organization declared that smallpox eradicated in the world in 1980.

Success history to contain virus through vaccines in the world.

I really don’t understand why some people still doubt with vaccines. Do you?

  3. What a topical post! Just the other day, I was talking to someone who pointed out that the only thing that eradicated smallpox was the vaccine. So true, of that and many other viruses! I signed up for the COVID vaccine but know it'll be awhile before I get it. Good thing I'm hunkered down at home! You stay safe too. :)

  6. Amazing how current science was able to establish smallpox in Ramses. Victims of polio would naturally be more open to vaccines … wishing such help was available earlier before they were stricken. Any untested vaccine deserves scrutiny as long term effects (if any) are not known. It’s a personal judgment where benefits must out weight the potential risks. But it is also a judgement effecting entire societies in stopping the spread.

  10. For some, their people were victims of white culture which included medical atrocities. It makes them reluctant to take the vaccine.

  11. Tanza, Beyond those who's history was marred by being unknowingly used for medical experiments, there are those who believe that vaccines can hurt them or their children or that it is a form or government overreach or control. As for me, I'll take the vaccine as soon as possible! Stay Safe and Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  13. Very interesting post. I have been catching up on the Lost Tomb series (a Chinese drama) and they have mentioned more than once how viruses were created in the tombs as a trap for the grave robbers who might try to rob the tombs.
