Body Mass Index (BMI) and Cancer – Cancer 9

Part of a garden in the city

You might know what is Body Mass Index (BMI). It is relationship between body weight and height of a person. The simple formula is:

BMI = 703 x (weight / height2).

Just for example, a person weight 70 kg (154 lb) and height is 170 cm (70 inches), thus his BMI is 22.1

It is said that the person BMI is normal, in healthy range. For comparison of BMI:

- 18 or less is thin (underweight)

- 18 to 25 is normal (healthy weight)

- 25 to 30 is overweight

- 30 over is obese.

So, what is relationship between BMI and cancers?

The higher BMI, the risk to get certain type of cancers is increasing! At least as one of indicators of unhealthy condition.

Chili ready to be harvested from our backyard

People knew long time ago that obese causes health problems such as heart diseases and type 2 diabetes.

Based on info from “cancer.net,” overweight and obese may relate to the following cancers:

- Kidney

- Uterine

- Prostate

- Breast

- Pancreatic

- Colorectal

- Thyroid

Hope, we could maintain our BMI at normal range to avoid health problems, include cancers.
