An Urban Fox Entered Our Backyard - Nature and Wildlife 22

A Fox catches a chicken

I just noticed a fox, I guessed a red fox, about 15 meter distant, entered my backyard in the early morning recently.

The Fox looks at me, I turn look at her eyes, then open my jacket, waving its. In responded, she run away.

It is said foxes afraid with very big object compared to their own body size.

Foxes used to come out from nearby forest (woods) in the dark hours years ago.

Our neighbors have seen foxes in day light on the streets about couple months ago. It might be they are stress or something happen with their habitat.

There are three kinds of identified foxes in our neighborhood:

- red fox (Vulpes vulpes)

- gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus)

- coyote (Canis latrans)

Chicken is one one favorite foods for foxes

It is said that foxes are adaptable to live around human being. They can not be relocated because could make them stress and dead.

Yes, they will eat chicken and little kitten. Just take care of these animals. Foxes mainly consume the following animals:

- mice

- rats

- squirrels

- rabbits.

Actually, I believe that foxes are dangerous animals, thus their out in day light is alarming.

However, one of my neighbors who lived for more than 50 years in our community said that “they have never hurt anyone or anything except mice and rats. They are happy here, just leave them alone.”

What do you think? Have you seen foxes in nature?

  3. Foxes are also very common in the Netherlands and when they have some young ones, it sometimes happens that they also catch chickens to feed their offspring. I would also like to write that they are also useful. Foxes also eat a lot of small mammals like rats, mice and rabbits. Just those species can cause damage to agricultural crops. So the fox is a partner in limiting agricultural damage. He also cleans up a lot of sick animals and carcasses.

  4. Foxes are common on this island and are protected. A family of them lived in our daughter’s neighbourhood and we saw them often. They scream which can be unnerving in the middle of the night when they are out hunting.

  6. Tanza, We do have a number of fox living in our area. They do a great job of controlling rodents and rabbits... There is one fox that trots down the middle of our road from time to time. There are 12 species of fox and they live on every continent except Antarctica. Attacks on humans are quite rare although small children have been bitten from time to time. Coyotes are not in the fox family and they are a much more significant threat to pets and small children than foxes are. Stay Safe and Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  8. When I visited my grandparents in Texas, there was one sleeping on a limb of a tree..so these fellows are quite agile. They have become urban. Lots of sightings here in the mid-west. Even skunks have invaded the city. You definitely, know you are in West Texas with the stench of a skunk in the air. I didn't think it would happen here. Hopefully, the rattle snakes won't find there way here. Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. Do you have chickens? We see lots of nature moving into our neighborhoods as of late. Even the deer find a way to have a little stampede from one back yard to the next. Foxes are clever!

  10. We have had rumor of a mountain lion around. So I guess I am OK with Foxes. Although, recently a possum actually got into a neighbor's house.

  14. I live in Pennsylvania and I do an hour walk in the same development every morning and I see THE FOX every morning either crossing the street or looking for food in someone's yard. It's always daylight - it's around 8:30 in the am.. He has never tried to come near us in fact, he looks a little afraid of us and takes off. I believe the one I see is a red fox.
